Digital Citizenship is a concept which helps teachers, technology leaders and parents to understand what students/children/technology users should know to use technology appropriately. Digital Citizenship is more than just a teaching tool; it is a way to prepare students/technology users for a society full of technology. Digital citizenship is the norms of appropriate, responsible technology use.  Too often we are seeing students as well as adults misusing and abusing technology but not sure what to do. The issue is more than what the users do not know but what is considered appropriate technology usage (www.digitalcitizenship.net).

Common Sense Media is the leading independent nonprofit organization dedicated to helping kids thrive in a world of media and technology. Their website has a detailed section dedicated to Parent Concerns such as Technology Addiction, Screen Time, Cyberbullying, Haters and Trolls, Learning with Technology and Privacy and Internet Safety. They offer practical advice and support to parents struggling with these issues. The #DeviceFreeDinner is a wonderful example of the initiatives they implement. (

Nearpod have teamed up with Common Sense Media and now offer over 70 interactive lessons which align to their
K-12 Digital Citizenship Curriculum.  Nearpod is an educational cross-platform application that allows teachers to create and share interactive lessons with their students.  Staff of SWIS have full access to all the resources on Nearpod.

Digital Citizenship in the MYP

The MYP Advisory Unit 3 entitled “Adaptive, Management and Coping Skills: Technology and Digital Citizenship” challenges old habits and aims to instil a stronger sense of awareness when using technology.
Our Statement of Inquiry explores how 'Rapid technological change creates tension and conflict when boundaries and purpose are in dispute.'  At the core of the module is the World Economic Forum’s eight-pronged digital life-skills for children.
We explore facts, concepts and debate the use and abuse of technology through the lens of student, parent, and faculty. We are seeking to bridge generational and cultural gaps in experience and understanding so that we make effective choices to enable success when using technology.

Social media is one of the most powerful, impactful tools in today's world. Ignoring it makes no sense...it's professional malpractice. Let's empower students to become digital leaders! #SocialLEADia by @JCasaTodd https://t.co/CPpoT4Oa3D #tlap #IMMOOC pic.twitter.com/TJX3SQjyR0
